XPN Rock Internacionale - El Guincho

Some folks talk about world music being the fusion of multiple regional styles, but few have so naturally embodied the concept like the 24-year old Barcelonan Pablo Diaz-Reixa, aka El Guincho. On his debut album Alegranza, El Guincho has seemingly merged bits of MIA, CSS, Vampire Weekend, Four Tet, Animal Collective, Beck, Os Mutantes, French hiphop, doo-wap, and the Beach Boys into a sound that is all his own.

Named after a bird from Reixa's native Canary Islands that always flies alone, El Guincho created Alegranza by himself - but sonically it's miles away from the typical solo outing - with samples of children's choruses and '50s records, warm analog synths and found percussion. You can see it via the magic of Youtube below, or catch El Guincho live in Philly at the Barbary on November 30th.

XPN's Rock Internacionale - giving just a small taste of what you can find in long form running on the Y-Rock stream every Saturday from 5-7pm. Hosted by DJ Ramon Martinez, Rock Internacionale gathers rock music from all over the world - Europe, the middle east, and especially South and Central America - places one doesn't normally associate with rock and roll. Ramon does a great job finding it every week on Y-Rock - and now each Wednesday at 6:10pm I'll feature a bit of Rock Internacionale on the XPN airwaves.
